The planet Mars

On the Planet Trail
The plaque is located on the beach side of the promenade just behind the many flagpoles, approximately at the level of Hotel Hübner, Seestraße - junction Heinrich-Heine-Straße. To better estimate the distance to the sun, please look for the model of the sun to the left of the lighthouse.

The planet Mars
The planet Mars has been known to mankind since ancient times and was named after the Roman god of war Mars because of its reddish glowing colour. It is accompanied by fear and terror - its moons Phobos and Deimos. It owes its reddish-brown colour to iron oxide dust on the surface and in the atmosphere.

Our neighbouring planet is home to huge craters, inactive volcanoes, petrified lava fields, mountain ranges and canyons. The "Valles Marineris" (Mariner valleys) are even the largest known rift system, and the shield volcano "Olympus Mons" is the highest known elevation in the solar system at 26 kilometres above the surrounding level.

The white polar caps visible in the telescope consist mainly of frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) and a small proportion of water ice. They are subject to seasonal fluctuations. Mars has a thin atmosphere. The average temperature is minus 55°C (max.: +20°C and min.: -85°C). As our neighbouring planet, Mars is an important destination, especially for future manned space missions. Mars is currently being visited by numerous space probes and Mars rovers such as the Curiosity rover.
