Audioguide Rostock - Station 3: University's Main Building

The main university building was built in 1867 in the style of the Italian Renaissance with rich terracotta decoration. The university itself was founded in 1419. This makes Rostock University one of the oldest in northern Europe and also one of the 10 oldest universities in Germany.

The founding faculties of Rostock University were medicine, theology, law and philosophy. They are shown as emblematic figures on four pillars on the front façade. Currently, it has nine different faculties with over 150 courses of study and partial courses of study with about 13,000 students.

The astronomer Tycho Brahe, the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann and writers such as Erich Kästner, Arnold Zweig and Fritz Reuter have been the most important students since the university was founded.

The Zoological Institute of the University of Rostock is located in the yellow building to the left of the main building. Due to its extensive animal collection, including the famous Rostock arrow stork, a visit is highly recommended.
