Neptune shipyard

One of the most important chapters in Rostock's industrial history began here. In 1850, Rostock engineer Albrecht Tischbein founded the Neptunwerft shipyard. One year later, the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz, the first iron screw steamer built in Germany, was launched. Industrial shipbuilding had begun in Rostock and the Neptunwerft shipyard grew to become the largest industrial operation in the country by the beginning of the 20th century. A total of over 1800 ships were built at this location. In 1991, shipbuilding at the Neptun shipyard ended for the time being. A short time later, production was moved downstream and the historic site was abandoned. The mechanical engineering hall from 1890, the shipbuilding hall, which has been extended several times and is now used as a shopping center, the air raid shelter and the striking slipway crane have been preserved.
