Stage 602, founding location DSR

The beginnings of the Deutsche Seerederei (DSR), the state-owned shipping company of the DDR, lie in this two-storey harbor building. A modest office was set up here when it was founded in 1952   The "Vorwärts" became the first ship. The economy of the DDR grew rapidly. As a result, the need for a merchant fleet also grew. By 1957, the premises at the city harbor were already too small. The shipping company moved into the former main waterways office in Lange Straße. In the 1970s, DSR operated a worldwide network of over 200 ships, including the characteristic Type IV freighters. One of these, the "Dresden", can be seen today as a museum ship in Schmarl. After reunification, various companies emerged from the DSR, including the AIDA cruise line. Today, the building is home to the Compagnie de Comedie Rostock.
