Harbor house, fisherman's bastion

From the fishermen's bastion you have a good view of the incoming ships. The roundel was part of Rostock's city fortifications from 1608 and, equipped with cannons, was intended to protect the port against enemy attacks. The harbor itself was located outside the city walls. The gates to the beach were only open during the day. The entrance to the harbor had also been closed at night since 1613. A row of piles had been driven into the river for this purpose, with so-called tree closers blocking the passage in the evening. It was not until the middle of the 18th century that the barrier was gradually abandoned. The brick building on the harbour was erected in 1954 as a social and cultural building for the State Secretariat for Shipbuilding of the GDR From 1998 to 2014, the Volkstheater Rostock operated the "Theater am Stadthafen" here.
