City walk through maritime and trendy Rostock

The city walk in the city harbour and through the Kröpeliner Tor Vorstadt (KTV for short) shows two facets of the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock with different charm and flair: The first part of the tour always takes you close to the water along the city harbour, while the second part of the tour immerses you in a former residential and working-class district from the founding days, which has developed into a trendy neighbourhood: students and young families feel equally at home here and many owner-managed cafés, pubs, restaurants, shops and squares invite you to linger. Let yourself drift through the neighbourhood and enjoy the alternative, young flair.

Details
The recommended city walk through Rostock's city harbour and the Kröpeliner Tor suburb described here starts at the Alter Fritz brewery inn; if you are travelling by tram, you can also start at Kröpeliner Tor or Schröderplatz. You can also start at the large Kabutzenhof car park if you want to park your car. As the city walk is a circular tour, you can start at any point.

From the Alter Fritz brewery inn, first follow the riverside promenade - always as close to the water as possible - in a north-westerly direction. You will pass the small museum harbour, the restaurants on the docks and a small marina. Opposite is the Gehlsdorfer Ufer, an extremely popular destination for sailors, ship owners and boat builders, walkers and those seeking relaxation. Passing the MAU Club and Compagnie de Comedie cultural venues, you reach the Kabutzenhof car park. The ferries to the other side of the Warnow leave from the ferry pier of the same name and the restaurant ship Otto is moored here all year round. The view and the vista towards Warnemünde are magnificent. Follow the banks of the Warnow for around 350 metres past the sailors' memorial and the Max Planck Institute before turning left onto the former Neptunwerft site in Hellingstraße and heading straight towards the restored crane, which is a reminder of the site's former use. This is where history meets modern living and working in the immediate vicinity of the water. Keep left at the crane and then immediately right again (Konrad-Zuse-Straße) and you will reach the pedestrian lights, which you use to cross Lübecker Straße and Doberaner Straße. Here begins the Kröpeliner Tor Vorstadt, or KTV for short, a district of Rostock with a population of around 19,000. KTV was originally a Wilhelminian-style residential area, mainly for shipyard workers, but today the colourful district is popular with students and young families. Let yourself drift through the streets and immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of young Rostock. Cafés and corner pubs invite you to linger, while the small owner-managed shops invite you to browse. There are regular weekly markets on Margarethenplatz and Doberaner Platz.

The KTV is also home to the Rostock Brewery, which has been an integral part of the neighbourhood since the 19th century. The Hanseatic Brewery can be visited on a guided tour.

Once you have reached Doberaner Platz, you are not far from the former medieval city centre of Rostock. This is clearly characterised by the western city gate of old Rostock, the Kröpeliner Tor. The Kröpeliner Tor was built as early as the 13th century and its size made it one of the largest of the 22 city gates at the time.

The route takes you back down to the start of the city walk via the Kanonsberg, from where you can once again enjoy a wonderful view of the city harbour. End your tour in the city harbour with a brewery speciality and a view of the water. If you are travelling in summer, the Rost Dock, a bar made from overseas containers, will certainly have its hatches open. How to relax in the city harbour...
