Thalasso Therapy Trail 3 - coastal forest, moor and heath

Take a deep breath in the coastal forest... the Rostock Heath is Rostock's unique city forest with 6,000 hectares of contiguous woodland directly bordering the Baltic Sea. A hike along thalasso therapy trails in Hohe Düne and Markgrafenheide takes you to different corners of the heath at different levels of exertion and combines active recreation and experiencing nature in a wonderful way. Sometimes you walk directly along the surf zone or through the diverse and varied landscape with beech and pine forests and wet moors - but always close to the Baltic Sea in the salty sea climate, which often meets soothing forest air here.

Details
From the Borwin car park in the Markgrafenheide seaside resort and its information board, follow the green signs for Thalasso Therapy Trail 3 towards the main road, cross it and walk straight ahead along Budentannenweg towards the Markgrafenheide campsite. About 200 metres before the StrandResort, a hiking trail leads to the right into the Rostock Heath - an overview board of the city forestry office marks the way. Cross the road here and follow the signs for the next 675 metres. If you now turn right onto the hiking trail, you will pass the "Heiligensee and Hütelmoor" nature reserve in its southern section. This area was given protected area status back in 1957, but the moorland was partially drained and used for agriculture during the GDR era. Renaturalisation measures only began in 1996 and the nature reserve has been left to its own devices again since 2008.

Once you have passed the moor and meadow landscape, you will once again enter the coastal forest of the Rostock Heath, one of 30 biodiversity hotspots and the largest contiguous coastal forest area in Germany today. After just over 650 metres, you will see a lookout point on your left shortly after the turn-off, which offers you a wonderful view over the nature reserve. The tower and the "Moor & More" station with a balance trail, information boards and rest areas are part of the "Biological Diversity" discovery trail, which was opened by the municipal forestry office in 2018. Take the opportunity for a short stopover.

Follow the wide, well-maintained forest path to the large forest crossroads with a rest area and another station ("Small but mighty") on the discovery trail. Turn right here and walk along the path to the main road - approx. 1.2 km. After crossing the road, Thalasso-Kurweg 3 runs the remaining 2 km on the cycle and footpath back to the starting point at the Borwin car park.

Be careful when crossing the main road.

Information & tips on climatic hiking and walking

  1. Exercise in the fresh air is good for every body at any age and in every season.
  2. Walking on the forest floor is more sheltered from the wind and sun than on the beach. The atmosphere of the forest allows the body to rest more quickly.
  3. The air in the surf zone is in constant motion and contains maritime aerosol, the effect of which is similar to a natural inhaler.
  4. The sea edge is the zone with the highest air purity, which is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers.
  5. A walk on the beach against the wind strains and trains the joints and muscles more than a hike on solid forest ground.
  6. When climate hiking, wear sportswear and sturdy shoes appropriate to the season.
