Thalasso Therapy Trail 5 - Schnatermannweg

Hiking in the Rostock coastal forest - in the Rostock Heath - is a relaxing experience with a high regeneration factor all year round. The Rostock Heath is one of the last large closed forest areas on the German Baltic Sea coast and is a jewel for active hikers thanks to its location and rich biodiversity. In the seaside resort area from Diedrichshagen to Markgrafenheide, you will find 10 designated thalasso therapy trails that lead you directly through the surf zone or into the neighbouring coastal forests - be active and enjoy the wonderful combination of salty sea air and soothing silence in the forest.

Details
You start in the seaside resort of Markgrafenheide at the "Borwin" car park, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the ferry terminal. From here, a hiking trail leads into the Rostock Heath to Schnatermann - it starts behind the imposing wooden statue of Borwin and the accompanying information board. The Schnatermann nature reserve is the habitat of many protected and endangered animals and plants such as the black woodpecker, tree falcon and lily of the valley. From the "Schnatermann" you can enjoy the unique view of the Warnow estuary, which is called "Breitling" in Rostock. At low tide, the Schnatermannstein can also be seen. According to legend, a ship sank here in winter. The only survivor saved himself on the huge boulder and could only "snatch" from the icy cold when locals found him. Follow the path for approx. 400 m and then turn right onto the smaller forest path with existing signs for Thalasso Therapy Trail 5. After approx. 1 km, this leads onto Fesselbrandsweg, which you turn right onto again. After crossing the Bauernwiesenschneise, continue straight ahead (from here Stuthofer Schneise) to the Mittelschneise. Turn right into this lane and walk straight ahead until you reach the first crossroads. Turn left into the Alte Stuthöfer Schneise and after another 500 metres you will reach the Stutöfer Weg. Follow this for approx. 1.5 kilometres to the right towards the traditional "Schnatermann" inn, where you can take a short break in the seasonally open beer garden. Special note: the last kilometre to the Schnatermann leads you along a road with little traffic. The way back takes you via Schnatermannschneise and Bauernwiesenschneise back onto Fesselbrandsweg, which you turn left onto. The Katthäger Weg then leads you back to the Borwin car park.

Information & tips on climatic hiking and walking

  1. Exercise in the fresh air is good for every body at any age and in every season.
  2. Walking on the forest floor is more sheltered from the wind and sun than on the beach. The atmosphere of the forest allows the body to rest more quickly.
  3. The air in the surf zone is in constant motion and contains maritime aerosol, the effect of which is similar to a natural inhaler.
  4. The sea edge is the zone with the highest air purity, which is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers.
  5. A walk on the beach against the wind strains and trains the joints and muscles more than a hike on solid forest ground.
  6. When climate hiking, wear sportswear and sturdy shoes appropriate to the season.
