Thalasso Therapy Trail 7 - coastal forest, moor and beach

Take a deep breath in the coastal forest... the Rostock Heath is Rostock's unique city forest with 6,000 hectares of contiguous woodland directly bordering the Baltic Sea. A hike along thalasso therapy trails in Hohe Düne and Markgrafenheide takes you to different corners of the heath at different levels of exertion and combines active recreation and experiencing nature in a wonderful way. Sometimes you walk directly along the surf zone or through the diverse and varied landscape with beech and pine forests and wet moors - but always close to the Baltic Sea in the salty sea climate, which often meets the soothing forest air here.

Details
Your hike starts at the Borwin car park at the overview board for the thalassotherapy trails of the Rostock Heath. From here, walk to the main road, cross it and walk eastwards along the Budentannenweg towards the campsite. Approx. 200 metres before the StrandResort Markgrafenheide, the path branches off to the right into the Rostock Heath. Look out for the moor ditch on the right-hand side of the hiking trail that now follows. An avenue of oak trees grows here with the tallest living oaks on Rostock Heath - they are around 200-300 years old.

At the fork in the path, follow the signs for Thalasso Therapy Trail 7 in the direction of Graal-Müritz. On the left-hand side, you will discover the "Birdlife of the moor" station - one of 15 educational stations on the "Biological Diversity" discovery trail in the Rostock Heath, which opened in 2018. You are now walking along the edge of the Heiligensee and Hütelmoor nature reserve. Follow the hiking trail between the reed beds to the next signpost and then turn back into the forest. After approx. 700 metres, you will pass another station on the discovery trail. Here you can also make a short stop at the observation tower and let your gaze wander over the Hütelmoor. You then hike for another kilometre along the Kuhschneise until you reach the third

station. Here, turn left onto the Kellerheidenweg towards Graal-Müritz / Rosenort. The hiking trail runs parallel to the Baltic Sea coastal cycle path for approx. 800 metres. So take a little care - especially in the summer months. On this section of the trail, you will have two more opportunities to take a look at the Hütelmoor; both viewing towers are signposted.

After approx. 600 metres, you will reach the Rosenortschneise via the Müggenburger Schneise, which will take you straight to Rosenort and the beach over the next 2 km. At the edge of the path, you will see a signpost indicating storm damage from 2015 - the effects can still be seen today.

At the junction to Graal-Müritz, continue straight ahead. You may already be able to smell and taste the sea air. Shortly before the beach access, a rest area invites you to take another sheltered break before you set off on the approx. 3 km long beach walk. You leave the beach again at beach access 36 and now walk along the south-western edge of the nature reserve on the side facing away from the water. You already know the next fork in the road from the outward route and now follow the signs straight ahead to Budentannenweg. Walk along the road back to the starting point at the Borwin car park.

Information & tips on climatic hiking and walking

  1. Exercise in the fresh air is good for every body at any age and in every season.
  2. Walking on the forest floor is more sheltered from the wind and sun than on the beach. The atmosphere of the forest allows the body to rest more quickly.
  3. The air in the surf zone is in constant motion and contains maritime aerosol, the effect of which is similar to a natural inhaler.
  4. The sea edge is the zone with the highest air purity, which is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers.
  5. A walk on the beach against the wind strains and trains the joints and muscles more than a hike on solid forest ground.
  6. When climate hiking, wear sports clothing and sturdy shoes appropriate to the season.
