Our home star - the sun

On the Planet Trail
The shiny golden model of the sun is located on a 3 metre high stone column right next to the lighthouse in a north-easterly direction. The model has a diameter of 1.4 metres - scale 1 to 1 billion. From here, the planetary path extends in a westerly direction. Now start your journey and reach the first planet - Mercury - at 58 metres.

Our home star - the sun

The sun is the only self-luminous body in our planetary system. The planets and moons only reflect light. Life on Earth is made possible by solar radiation. Even with small telescopes, solar activity can be visualised in the form of prominences and sunspots.

Mankind has long been interested in the question: Why does the sun actually shine? Today we know that the radiant energy in the centre of the sun is generated by nuclear fusion, in which hydrogen is converted into helium. This process has already lasted 4.6 billion years and will continue for another 5 billion years. Then the nuclear fuel will be used up and the sun will eventually become a white dwarf.

The planets orbit the sun and are held in their orbits by gravity. The smaller the distance of the planets from the sun, the greater their orbital speed. While Mercury has the shortest orbital period of 88 days , Neptune takes around 165 years to orbit the sun.
