On the Planet Trail
The plaque is located in the middle of the lakeside promenade at a lofty height directly in front of a stall on the lower lighthouse forecourt. The model of the sun appears oversized compared to the dot on the board, which represents the planet Mercury in terms of size, when viewed from here.

The planet Mercury
The small distance from the sun makes observations of the smallest planet relatively difficult and only possible in relatively few hours of the year, as the angular distance is never greater than 28°. Mercury not only has the smallest distance from the sun, but also the shortest orbital period.

Its surface is very similar to that of the Earth's moon. It is littered with craters. Because of its great heat and low gravitational pull, Mercury cannot maintain an atmosphere. Without an atmosphere, the extreme temperature differences from up to 450°C during the day to below -170°C at night cannot be compensated for.

The first space probe to reach Mercury was "Mariner 10" from 1974 to 1975. NASA's "Messenger" probe has been exploring the planet since 2008.

The perihelion rotation of Mercury cannot be fully explained by classical Newtonian mechanics, but confirms Einstein's theory of general relativity.

Directions
The well-developed A19 and A20 motorways and numerous roads will take you directly to Rostock. You can reach Warnemünde via the city motorway. The Warnow Tunnel is the fastest connection across the Warnow.

Parking
Use the designated car parks and multi-storey car parks at the entrance to Warnemünde.

Public transport
You can reach Warnemünde from Rostock main station by taking the S-Bahn to Warnemünde station.

The Warnemünde seaside resort can also be reached by Flixbus, which stops at Warnemünde Werft. From here it is a 15-minute walk (1 kilometre) to the start/end point of the city tour at the Tourist Information.
